I love being a pet owner; they are all significant part of my life. I joke that I like animals more than people, but really sometimes it’s true. Pets share unconditional love and seem to know just what kind of a day you’re having. In our little household, I affectionately refer to our pups as “The Pack,” and I love being the guardian to these three funny and lovable dogs. Over the course of the next few months, I will be sharing individual profiles on all three pups, highlighting their unique personalities which makes each so special.
Meet Becks, my wheaten-colored Scottish Terrier. He was rescued from a Scottish Terrier rescue organization up in Washington state when he was just six months old. He had a rough start to life though. He was born in a puppy mill, then sold to a pet shop that went out of business, and that’s how he wound up in the rescue group. I adopted him knowing he had special medical needs; he was severely underweight, had a life-threatening respiratory infection, and a chronic ear infection which caused him to go deaf in one ear. However, it was love at first sight. I named him Becks after the beer because of the way he walks—he always looks a little tipsy. Becks is now nine years old and will celebrate his tenth birthday in May. He loves his big Scottie brother Beowulf, and his little sister Schenna looks up to him so much. I always joke that it is a good thing Becks is cute because his big puppy eyes get him out of a lot of trouble. He has a very mischievous side, like stealing toys and hiding them from Beowulf and Schenna, or how he loves to eat paper, or sneaking bits of Beowulf’s food when he isn’t looking. He is too curious for his own good which leads him into challenging predicaments. Not to mention the little puddles he occasionally leaves because he didn’t let me know he had to go “potty” soon enough. But despite these flaws, he is the biggest cuddler of them all. If you are sitting on the couch, he will insist on wiggling his way right into your lap for a tummy rub or ear scratch.
Becks also has a few hidden talents. He can “aroooo,” which is unique to Scotties, and not all Scotties can do that, including his brother Beowulf. He also can howl like a coyote. Honestly, you can’t even tell the difference. Full moons are especially musical in our household! His other little quirk is his need to have his “five minutes,” where he zooms around, chasing his tail, his toys, his siblings, and growling at anything and everything. I don’t know where these little bursts of energy come from, but they sure are cute. Afterwards, he needs his quiet time, and he usually comes and lays by my side. Sometimes if I’m lucky he even lets me pick him up and cradle him for an extra special cuddle. I am so thankful I get to be this little guy’s person and provide him with a safe and warm home where his differences are embraced, and he is spoiled with lots of love and treats, including his favorites from Bocce’s Bakery.
