AN AFTERNOON AT THE OC FAIR

August 1, 2017
Last week I made a trip over to the Orange County Fair.  I invited my Mom along for the adventure and a little girls time.  I haven’t been to the OC Fair since I was a little girl and to be honest I can’t really remember the visit.  We both had a wonderful fun filled afternoon, petting animals, enjoying tasty treats, attending shows, and people watching.
The OC Fair is celebrating its 127th and commemorating Orange County’s rich agricultural past with the theme of “Farm Fresh Fun.”I love the local pride that was on display at the fair.  Honestly, there is something for everyone to enjoy, from exhibits of homegrown fruits and vegetables, collectibles, woodworking, artisan’s crafts, and so much more.  My mom appreciated the garden, floral, cooking, and craft exhibits, from local, all vying for a blue ribbon.  I think I may have convinced her to enter her turtle collection for next year’s fair; I will keep you posted. My favorite part of the fair was Centennial Farm.  As you all know by now I am a huge animal lover, so anytime I have the opportunity to be around them up close and personal I’m happy, and this trip to the farm did not disappoint!  The three-acre farm is home to cattle, horses, goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, pigs, and a plethora of fruits and vegetables. The highlight of my visit was seeing six-day old piglets and their proud Mama Violet.  They were so cute, and each had their own unique personality.

The other treat was meeting Ruby and Pearl, two-and-half week old Holstein Dairy cows.  Those two girls were just adorable and acted a lot like my pups.

People watching on our walk through the carnival rides was very entertaining.  I couldn’t believe the daredevil rides the fair had to offer.  I didn’t go on any attractions though; I prefer to keep both my feet on the ground.

Our visit wouldn’t have been complete without experiencing some iconic fair treats.  It was too hot for the picture, but we relished in our dipped ice cream cones.  Such a welcomed relief from the heat.

Our last stop was the Alaska Pig Race, where yours truly was picked to be an official for the race!  I am beginning to think I have a thing for pigs!  I was so surprised at how fast those little guys could run and to make the race more challenging the pigs had to jump over fences.  In the end, Strawberry won.  Hard to imagine one day this little piggy will be a six-hundred-pound sow.

The fair is open through Sunday, August 13 so take a step away from your hectic life and enjoy the offerings of a hometown tradition.

Here are a few tips if you are planning a visit to the OC Fair this summer.  Come early to get parking and avoid the crowds, and be prepared to spend $10.00 for parking.  General admission is $12.00 and well worth the price.  Remember to pick up a fair map ounce you enter the grounds.  Lastly, you can also bring your own food in if you aren’t up for the chocolate covered fried bacon.
