OFFICE DESIGN PLAN

July 8, 2019

I shared in my summer bucket list that I want to decorate my husband’s office at work.  He is the head men’s and women’s golf coach at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa and spends a lot of time at work as he continues to grow his teams.  He just finished his inaugural season and was named GSAC Coach of the year.  I’m very proud of him.  Anyways, last year Jeff said I could decorate his office; and at Christmas, I gave him a few pictures and items for his office.  But it wasn’t until now that I have had the time to put it all together.  Today, I am sharing my before pictures of his office and my design plans and inspiration.

Last week, we spent the majority of one day cleaning the whole office.  I don’t think that office had been dusted in thirty years, so it was quite a task to accomplish.  Jeff also put in a request to the facilities department to have the walls painted.  I am glad that we don’t have to do the painting ourselves because I wasn’t looking forward to doing all the trim work around the attached-to-the-wall bookcase hutch you will see in the pictures below, in addition to standing up on a ladder to paint the upper wall.

Before Pictures:

As you can see from the photos, his office is very tiny widthwise and very tall ceiling-wise.  Which means I have one entire wall to use as gallery wall space.  The desk is staying in the office, and I cannot do anything to change the yellowish-honey color of the wood.  However, I think I have found some inspiration pictures to help camouflage the less-than-desirable wood tone.

Inspiration:
Normally I would make a mood board of my design plans, but I struggled with this project because so much was already set in place, such as the fixed desk and cork board, so instead, I found images that I could draw inspiration from.  To do this, I went to Pinterest to look for design inspiration.  You can visit my inspiration board here.  Here are a few of the designs that I am drawing inspiration from.

Office Plans:

  • Paint: The color I picked for the walls and trim is Benjamin Moore’s Hazy Skies.  Chris Loves Julia (one of my favorite blogs) had this paint color in the living and dining rooms in their previous house, and I fell in love with it.  You can see a picture of their rooms here.  Hazy Skies is a nice subtle putty color, with green-gray tones which I am hoping will soften the harsh yellowish honey color of the desk.
  • Neutral Decor: Ever since Jeff said I could decorate his office for him, I have been on the hunt for neutral decor that would go well in a golf coach’s office without being cheesy golf knick-knacks.  This is where Pinterest was very helpful.  I did a search on vintage sports décor, and that is where I found a lot of inspiration, such as old loving cups, an old wire basket filled with golf balls, and vintage golf clubs.  I am also including some faux plants from IKEA in basket weave planters for dimension and texture.  I have a feeling Jeff would not remember to water real plants.  All of the items I have collected so far have a similar color palate which will all tie in together nicely.
  • Meaningful Artwork & Pictures: I mentioned above that the wall opposite the desk is a blank canvas, and I plan to create a gallery wall of inspirational sayings, photographs of courses Jeff likes, and golf memorabilia, like his coach of the year plaque.  (I’m a very proud wife.)  In doing research in golf décor, I stumbled across this company called Lie & Loft which specializes in golf-related home decor.  I especially like their course maps.
These are my ideas for now.  Of course, the office will definitely be a work in progress for some time; but now that I have more of a game plan, I’m excited to get started.  And, once the painting is complete, the fun part of decorating can begin!
