HOW TO CLEAN MAKEUP BRUSHES

April 14, 2020

With all this “free” time from sheltering-in-place orders, many of us have been organizing our homes.  Last week I shared with you the organization of my upstairs linen cabinet (I’m happy to report it still looks good).  Today, I am going to share how to properly and efficiently clean makeup brushes, an area of my cleaning routine that I’m constantly forgetting about.

I mentioned in that post how I have recently become interested in skincare; and while it is important to give your skin love, it is equally as important to take care of your makeup brushes to protect your skin.  Dirty and oil accumulate on the bristles of your brushes which can not only lead to uneven messy makeup application, but also to cause your skin to breakout, clog your pores, and leave bacteria to linger on your face.  Yuck, I sure don’t want that on my skin!

Did you know you are supposed to clean your makeup brushes once a week?  According to my research, dermatologists recommend that you should clean your makeup brush every 7 – 10 days, especially the ones you use most often, like your foundation, concealer, and powder brushes.  Not only does cleaning your brushes sanitize and clean your brushes, but it also conditions the bristles of your brushes, extending their longevity.

After I found that out, I immediately turned to research to find out what would be the most simple, effective, and cost-efficient way to clean my makeup brushes.  It turns out you can buy pricey makeup brush cleaners, which can be expensive, or just use baby shampoo and water to clean and sanitize your brushes.

Today, I’m sharing a quick and easy tutorial on how to clean your makeup brushes with baby shampoo and water.

How To Clean Makeup Brushes:

1. Run the bristles of the makeup brush under warm water, to loses and rid the debris on the brush.  Make sure you do not submerge your brushes in water and keep the bristles of the brush downwards to avoid getting water in the part where the brush handle and the bristle connect.  This helps to keep your brushes lasting longer, submerging or wetting this area of your brush can loosen the glue that holds the bristle together.

2. Pour a nickel-sized amount of baby shampoo into the palm of your hand and swirl the bristles of the brush in your palm to lather.

3. Rinse the bristles of the brush in warm water, again in a downward motion, to avoid submerging the brush.  Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the water runs clean, and you feel your brush bristles are clean of makeup, dirt, and oils.

4. Lastly, use a towel to blot dry your brushes, reshaping them as you go.

5. Lay your brushes flat on the edge of the sink to dry overnight. Remember, you will want to wait to use your brushes until they are completely dry.

It’s pretty easy, right?  Cleaning your makeup brushes may not seem like the most glamorous cleaning task, but it is something that we should all incorporate weekly into our regular beauty routine.
